Privacy Policy

Summary

  • No account required. We do not ask for your name, phone number, or location. If you join the waitlist or contact support, we use your email only for that request.
  • The apps you choose to block are stored only on your device. Kappi cannot see which apps you picked, only how many.
  • No ads.
  • We use privacy-focused analytics to improve the app. Analytics events are coarse (for example, “a focus session started”) and never include app names, web domains, or your screen time data.
  • Optional purchases are processed by Apple; we never see your payment details.

What Stays on Your Device

Kappi is designed so that the sensitive part of what it does, knowing which apps you block, never leaves your iPhone or iPad:

  • Your app selection. When you choose apps to protect, iOS gives Kappi opaque, privacy-preserving tokens rather than app names. These tokens are stored only on your device and are never uploaded, synced, or shared. Kappi's own services cannot read which apps you selected.
  • Your blocking history. Records of shields, attempts, and focus sessions are stored locally.
  • Your screen time data. Kappi never reads, collects, or transmits your Screen Time usage data. Blocking is enforced by Apple's own frameworks at the system level.

Data We Collect

To understand how Kappi is used and to improve it, we collect a small set of anonymized usage events via PostHog, such as “onboarding started,” “focus session started,” or “a blocked app open was attempted.” These events are deliberately coarse:

  • They never include app names, bundle identifiers, or web domains.
  • They never include your screen time or usage durations.
  • They are tied to a random, opaque identifier generated on your device, not to your name, email, or any account.

Data We Do Not Collect

Through the Kappi app, we do not collect or request:

  • Personal identifiers (name, email address, phone number)
  • Contacts, calendars, photos, camera, microphone, precise location
  • The names or identities of the apps you block
  • Screen time reports or app usage durations
  • Health or fitness data
  • Device advertising identifiers

Waitlist and Support Emails

If you join the Kappi waitlist, we collect your email address through Resend so we can send Kappi TestFlight or App Store launch updates. Waitlist emails are optional, and you can unsubscribe from future Kappi update emails at any time.

If you contact support, we use the email address and message you provide to respond to your request.

Apple Screen Time and Family Controls

Kappi blocks apps using Apple's Screen Time technology (the Family Controls, Managed Settings, and Device Activity frameworks). When you grant Screen Time permission, the operating system, not Kappi's servers, enforces the shields you set up. Apple's frameworks are built so that third-party apps like Kappi receive only anonymous tokens for the apps you select, which is why Kappi cannot identify them. For details on how Apple handles this data, see Apple's privacy policy.

Analytics and Crash Reporting

We use PostHog, a privacy-focused analytics platform, to understand how people use Kappi. In addition to the coarse events described above, PostHog receives:

  • Device type and operating system version
  • App version
  • Session start and end times
  • General location (country/region level, derived from IP address; the IP address itself is not stored)
  • An anonymous identifier (not linked to your personal identity)

This data cannot be used to personally identify you. Your app selections, blocking history, and screen time data are never sent to PostHog or any other external service.

Additionally, if you have opted in at the OS level, Apple may provide us with anonymized, aggregated crash and performance reports. These can include device model, operating system version, and anonymized crash traces, and cannot be used to identify you.

In-App Purchases

Kappi offers premium features (Kappi Plus) through subscriptions processed by Apple. We never store or have access to your payment information.

We use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions and entitlements. RevenueCat collects:

  • Purchase metadata (product identifier, transaction timestamps, purchase status)
  • Paywall analytics (views, dismissals, conversion events)
  • The same anonymous identifier used for analytics
  • Device and platform information

This data is used to validate purchases, enable premium features, and help us understand the subscription experience. RevenueCat has no access to your app selections or personal identity.

iCloud Sync (Optional)

If you are signed in to iCloud, Kappi can sync your settings, such as notification preferences and protection schedules, across your devices using Apple's CloudKit. This sync contains no app identities and no blocking history. It is stored in your personal iCloud account under Apple's privacy terms, and we cannot read it. If iCloud is unavailable or disabled, Kappi simply keeps everything local.

Data Sharing and Sale

We do not sell your data. We do not share personal data with third parties. The following services process limited data on our behalf:

  • PostHog: processes anonymized analytics events to help us understand app usage and improve the experience
  • RevenueCat: processes purchase metadata to manage subscriptions
  • Apple (CloudKit): stores your optional settings sync in your own iCloud account
  • Resend: stores optional waitlist emails and delivers support or Kappi update emails

Third-Party Services

For more information about how these services handle data, please refer to their privacy policies:

Data Security

Since the sensitive data stays on your device, you maintain full control over it. Your device's built-in protections (device passcode, encryption, and iCloud security) protect Kappi's data the same way they protect the rest of your phone.

Data Retention and Deletion

Your Kappi data remains on your device until you delete it. Deleting the app removes everything stored locally. If you used the optional iCloud settings sync, you can remove that data from iCloud in your device settings.

Purchase records are maintained by Apple for billing and anti-fraud purposes. We cannot delete those records, but you can manage your purchase history through your Apple account.

Children's Privacy

Kappi is not directed to children under 13 and is not a parental control product. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Your Privacy Rights (GDPR/UK GDPR)

Depending on your location, you may have rights such as access, correction, deletion, and portability. Because the analytics data we collect is anonymized and cannot be linked to you personally, there is generally nothing for us to provide or delete related to app usage. Your app selections and blocking history are stored only on your device and are under your control. If you contact us by email or join the waitlist, you can request deletion of that email data at any time.

Changes to This Policy

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify users of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the “Last updated” date.
